International Women's Day
To all our amazing women of today, wishing you a Happy Women’s day!
Today is International Women’s Day and this year’s theme is #embraceequity.
Each March, it’s a time to reflect on how far we’ve come, but perhaps more importantly, what we still need to do in the future.
When CBC first started 30 years ago, the focus was gender equality. It was making sure women were given the same workplace opportunities as men. It meant employing the right person for the role regardless of gender. And of course, recognising equal pay for equal work. As I look around the office and visit our projects, I’d like to think we’ve done a good job in this regard.
But in 2023, we need to recognise that equality only happens when everyone starts from the same starting line. And we know this isn’t always the case. As an industry, we’ve become better at providing equality, but not necessarily equity.
“Equality is giving everyone a shoe. Equity is giving everyone a shoe that fits.”
As a company, I want CBC to be an ally in the advancement of women through all levels of life - from early education, into the workplace and beyond retirement. To do this we must:
- challenge gender stereotypes and draw attention to bias when we see it;
- continue to embrace diversity and inclusion; and
- fight for fairness and equity.
We recognise there’s still a lot to be done and we’re constantly learning.
But when we know better, we'll do better.
So please, never be afraid to let us know how we can best support our amazing women of today and the future. We truly welcome your ideas and suggestions.
